What is neuropsychology?

A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation can provide important information regarding an individual’s current cognitive and emotional functioning.

Strengths and weaknesses are identified through a series of measures assessing a variety of neuropsychological domains. Areas typically assessed include overall cognitive ability as measured by an IQ test, academic ability in reading, writing, and mathematics, expressive and receptive language ability, mood, attention, impulsivity, executive functioning skills, memory, and social awareness.

A neuropsychological evaluation for children and adolescents typically takes between 3 and 4 hours. For young adults, an evaluation may take up to 5 or 6 hours. A neuropsychological evaluation consists of an interview with parents and caregivers, an evaluation of the child, and a feedback session reviewing the scores, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations.
